Graeae
Graeae, Britain’s leading disabled led theatre company, relocated to in a Grade II Listed building in Kingsland Road. The space needed to be fully accessible, where artists could undertake training and professional development, rehearse and network.
Designed in discussion with Graeae’s artistic team, associate artists and disabled artist focus groups, the project centres on access for disabled people and has incorporated a number of creative design features within the scheme. The entire project has been informed by Graeae’s unique approach to access and wellness: from tactile flooring to sensitive heating systems, acoustics and scented trees to adaptable work services and bright WCs. The design also incorporated delegate conferencing and control room facilities, an ante room entertainment facility for 90 people and a non-branded reception, enabling any organisation hiring the venue to transform the space to suit their requirements. The existing façade was retained and modernised with large glass windows to activate the street front. With an urban feel the space is a world away from the institutional buildings often associated with disabled people.
